Established himself in Antwerp around 1549. First, he worked as a bookbinder, but as from 1555 he distinguished himself as a printer, and opened his printing business 'De Gulden Passer' (The Golden Compass).
After Plantin's death in 1589, his successors, the Moretuses, continued printing mostly for the catholic Counter-Reformation.
Jan I Moretus (1543 - 1610), who married Plantin's daughter Martina, inherited the printing business from his father-in-law.
Plantijn printed many important atlases and books: Ortelius, Guiciardini, etc.
