Volume I: Atlas Isaak de Graaf/Atlas Amsterdam
A hidden treasure from the Netherlands National Archives rediscovered and first published after 300 years.
This facsimile version will be a single hard-cover edition of 1600 individually numbered copies, each consisting of 420 pages in full-colour print; all text will be both in Dutch and English. The Atlas weighs just over 12 kg.
A seven-volume scientific atlas series covering all overseas settlements and possessions of the Dutch United East India Company (VOC, 1602-1799), its composition based on facsimile reproductions of manuscript maps, charts, town plans and drawings from the collections of the Netherlands National Archives and various other VOC archives.
By Günter Schilder, Jacques Moerman, Ferjan Ormeling, Paul van den Brink, Hans Ferwerda.
The first, introductory volume, a facsimile edition of the so-called Atlas Amsterdam or Atlas Isaak de Graaf, was originally printed in 1000 numbered copies. This run was sold out immediately. We are however able to offer some numbered copies from the original 1000 copies. The Amsterdam map-maker Isaak de Graaf (1668-1743) compiled this unique two-volume manuscript atlas of 187 maps covering all the VOC’s settlements and territorial possessions in Asia and Africa between 1691 and c. 1704 for the exclusive use by the Company’s Board of Directors, the Heren Zeventien. Having served its purpose as a major work of geographical reference to the Board until the very dissolution of the VOC in 1799, the Atlas was removed to Paris following the French occupation of Holland in 1810. After the definitive fall of Napoleon in 1815, it was only with great difficulty and after several months of diplomatic strife that it could at last be retrieved and returned to the Netherlands. There the Atlas remained in the archives of the Ministry for the Colonies until 1856, when together with most other pre-1813 colonial records it was handed over to the State Archives (Rijksarchief) to be included in the newly established Map Collection. Shortly afterwards it was decided to take Isaak de Graaf’s masterpiece apart and divide its individual maps, charts, plans and drawings up according to the various sections in the Map Collection. Unfortunately, no record was kept of the original structure of the Atlas, and within a few decades all knowledge of this seems to have been entirely lost. It was only in the 1970s and 1980s that Professor Günter Schilder, Chair of Historical Cartography at Utrecht Univerity, after years of meticulous research finally managed a full reconstruction of the Atlas Isaak de Graaf/Atlas Amsterdam, which is now the basis for the present first public edition.
This facsimile version will be a single hard-cover edition of 1500 individually numbered copies, each consisting of 420 pages in full-colour print; all text will be both in Dutch and English. The Atlas weighs just over 12 kg.
Until 31 december 2006, the Atlas Isaak de Graaf/Atlas Amsterdam will be available at a reduced introductory price of € 295/- per copy excluding P&P; afterwards the atlas will be sold exclusively at the regular list price of € 350/- per copy.
P&P per copy: Europe EU: € 20/-; rest of Europe: € 25/-; all other countries: € 35/-.
