Little is known of Bouguereau except that he was a master printer and publisher in Tours, for a time the seat of the French government. There, in 1594, he published the first national atlas of France, basing its contents on a variety of regional maps which had appeared during the previous half century.

The atlas is extremely rare, very few copies existing in various states. It was re-issued in later years by J . leClerc and J. Boisseau.
