MICHAL, Jacques de
about 1680 to about 1750
Jacques de Michal (about 1680 to about 1750) was a French military
cartographer. There are several manuscript maps know which he produced
during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). In times of peace
he continued map making, some of these maps were engraved and published
by Matthäus Seutter in Augsburg. These are a map of Suabia ( Suevia
universa, 9 sheet), a map of the Rhine (Rhenus per tres tabellas, 3
sheet), the Suabian territory of Burgau (Marchionatus Burgoviae, 1
sheet), a plan of the fortress of Kehl (Plan und gegende der Vöste Keel,
1 sheet), and "your" map of Alsace (3 sheet). The undated map was
published separately around 1725/30. In his atlasses Seutter used to
insert another map of Alsace (Alsatia Landgraviatus, 1 sheet), but this
one was not made by Michal.
