First complete Bibliography. Bibliography of Nineteenth Century illustrated works containing views of towns and cities engraved on steel with alphabetical indexes of book-titles, authors, views of towns and cities, artists and engravers as well as publishers.
Purpose As stated in the Preface, the purpose of this Bibliography is to offer an hitherto lacking systematic overwiew and description of Nineteenth Century illustrated works containing views of towns and cities engraved on steel. It should allow librarians, antiquarian book dealers and collectors to place these works among the large number of them published in England, Europe and America during the period under review, i.e. between ca. 1820 - when steel-engraving began - and the end of the century, while making it possible - through the various indexes - to attribute a specific engraved view to a particular edition of the relevant work on the basis of the topographical title ofthe prints and/or indications as to the artist, engraver, publisher or printer, etc.

Indexes In the Index of book-titles, emphasis was deliberately given to the various printed and/or engraved titles, rather than to the authors, since a large number of them are anonymous works, and can therefore not be easily identified othenwise. Furthermore, experience shows that one and the same anonymous work is often carried under different names of artists, engravers, publishers, etc. in the major libraries. It was therefore found more useful to provide an alphabetical index of book-titles allowing quick and direct access to the described work through its ordinal number, rather than to attempt any other form of “mixed” index. However, in order to facilitate the search for specific books via their autho r or authors and to allow identification of works by the same author, an Index of authors is also provided.
