The maps and charts, published separately
by Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), Pieter van den Keere (1571-c. 1646) and
Hessel Gerritsz (1580/81-1632), will be the subject of this volume.
All three men were renowned engravers mapmakers and
publishers who had a decisive influence on development of cartography
in Amsterdam. Their lives and cartographic works will be discussed in
detail.
A
selection of the maps will be reproduced at full scale. From Hondius's
production, e.g., a hitherto unknown 8-sheet wall map of the world on
Mercator's projection (1595/96), the wall maps of the continents (1598)
and of the Seventeen Provinces (1593 and 1602). From Van den Keerius
hand, e.g., a map of the world in 4 sheets (1609) and of Germania (1611)
in 7 sheets. Included in Hessel Gerritsz's contribution to this volume
are facsimiles of wall maps of Spain (1612) Italy (1617) and Northern
Europe.
An illustrated carto-bibliography of the folio-sized maps of all
three map-makers, published separately will be also part of this
publication, accompanied by a selection of full-size reproductions.
